Headline

A strong team performance to take Match 2 and move to two wins from two, putting B&B top of the table on maximum league points and well placed heading into the rest of the season.

The standout moment of the day was the U18 Women’s 4x100m. Izzy, Cheyanne, Sophie and Ruby clocked 46.48 — a time that ranks 5th fastest in the UK this year across all women’s 4x100m squads, not just the age group. A really notable run from a young quartet with plenty of season still ahead of them.

Headline Performances

Aaron — U18 Men’s Hammer 5kg A, 59.94m. A big throw to win the A-string, backed up by Rory with 55.82m to take the B-string.

Cheyanne — U18 Women’s 100m A, 12.08 (grade 9). Tight A-string win over Grace Sikora (12.09).

Ebube — sub-11 for the first time, 10.99 to win the U20M 100m B. A milestone performance, and the sort of breakthrough that points to where his season is heading. Backed it up in the winning 4×100.

Eliot — U18 Men’s 400m A, 49.33. Anchor leg of the winning U18M 4×400.

Emilia — U18 Women’s Shot Putt A, 16.09m. Top performance grading of the entire match (1,198 UKYDL pts — the quality scale, not the team-points scale). Also took 2nd in the Javelin A with 30.57m.

Joshua — U18 Men’s Long Jump A, 6.94m. Second-highest performance grading of the match (1,124 UKYDL pts). Also third in the U18M HJ A on 1.80m.

Kian — U18 Men’s 800m A, 1:58.06. Only sub-2 in the field.

Olivier — U18 Men’s Shot Putt 5kg A (16.32m) and Discus 1.5kg A (47.36m). Double A-string win.

Omari — U20 Men’s High Jump A, 1.93m. Jumped up an age group from U18 and took the A-string win.

U18 Women’s 4x100m — 46.48 (UK No.5 overall this year, across all age groups). Izzy, Cheyanne, Sophie and Ruby. The performance of the day.

Depth Across the Programme

A match like this is won as much in the second events as in the headline wins. A few that deserve particular mention:

• James — U18M HJ B, 1.50m for joint third, not long after winning the U20M 3000m B in 10:41.86. Off the track and over the bar, and scored in two age groups in two events that couldn’t be more different.
• Aniket — U20M 800m B (2:15.13) and U18M 3000m B (1st in 9:48.64). Ran up an age group and still found a win back in his own.
• Nathan — U20M 3000m A (2nd in 9:22.61) and U18M 800m B (2nd in 2:06.04). Same pattern — points in the older age group and his own.
• Rory — U18M PV B (1st, 2.96m) and HT B (1st, 55.82m). Two B-string wins in two very different events.
• Alexander — U18M 400m B (1st, 52.64) and 400H A (4th, 57.06). A 400/400H double is no small task; he then anchored the winning U18M 4×400.
• Tane — U20M 400m B (1st, 54.23). B-string win.
• George — U18M JT B (1st, 39.23m). B-string win.
• Honey — U20W 100m B (2nd), 200m B (3rd) and 4×100 lead-off. Three scoring runs.
• Beatriz — U20W 400m B (3rd, 64.05) and U20W 4×100.
• Alice — U20W HJ A (3rd, 1.35m), U18W 400m B (2nd, 61.89) and a leg of the winning U18W 4×400. Across two age groups and three events.

Multi-Event Standouts

Several athletes shouldered multi-event loads and delivered across the board:

• Ella — U18W triple-up across the throws: SP B (1st, 11.71m), DT A (1st, 33.88m), HT B (2nd, 25.12m).
• Jackie — U18W triple-up: HJ B (2nd), DT B (1st), HT A (2nd, 43.20m).
• Fayo — U18W triple-up: 100H B (1st, 14.32 grade-9), HJ A (2nd, 1.60m), JT B (1st, 23.18m).
• Rebekah — U20W triple: 100H A (1st, 15.09), SP A (3rd), JT A (3rd, 27.87m), plus the U20 A 4×400.
• Oji — U20M sprint double (100m A 11.08, 200m A 22.27) plus 4×100 lead-off.
• Ruby — U20W sprint double (100m A 1st 12.28, 200m A 1st 25.66) plus anchor of the U18W 4×100.
• Cheyanne — U18W sprint double (100m A 1st 12.08, 200m A 2nd 25.21) plus the U18W 4×100.
• Charlie — U18M PV A (2nd, 3.76m) and JT A (2nd, 51.23m).
• Euan Lau — U20M LJ A (1st, 5.56m) and TJ A (1st, 12.72m).
• Max — U20M JT A (1st, 52.25m) and SP A (3rd).
• Naimah — U18W 800m A (2nd) and 3000m A (1st, 10:56.78), plus the U20 A 4×400.

Match Summary

B&B finished on 729.5 points, ahead of Harrow & Dacorum (584.0) in second. Woodford Green AC with Essex Ladies (539.5) took third, followed by Reading (501.0), WSEH (439.0) and Portsmouth + Winchester (107.0).

The result was built on contributions across all four age groups:

45 event wins in total (29 A-string, 16 B-string) across track, field and relays.

Tim’s report  Phew, What a Scorcher!

Our second league match of the summer, as is often the case, fell in the middle of the late May Bank Holiday weekend. For a change, we were promised good weather, potentially too good, as it turned out, with an unwelcome record being set during the day of being the hottest so far. It was also scheduled for the day after the first Senior NAL match, which was never going to be a benefit, and the middle of exam season. Nonetheless, girls rallied round and many gaps were filled, so we arrived in Eton with most events filled.

We also arrived as Division leaders, knowing that another decent performance would see us leave with a foot in September’s National Final. By 11.00, and the start of the track programme, it was already becoming uncomfortable for intense activity and the thermometer was only going in one direction. Gracelyn got us off to the best of starts with a win in the U20 long hurdles and Beth was placed in the U18 race. Up next was the 3000m (complete with drinks station) and our three reps, Naimah, Charlotte and Aida each won their categories, earning us mega points given very few other girls braved the conditions.

The weather was certainly more conducive for sprinting and we took full advantage with Ruby and Cheyanne taking the U20 and U18 A races respectively and Honey and Sophie runners-up in the B strings. Out in the infield Jackie and Ella similarly took 2^nd places in the U18 hammer and the two Annabelles took bronze positions in the Long Jump. Not to be outdone, Emilia was again over 16m to win the U18 shot (and in the process topped the ‘points for performance’ table for the match) with Ella taking the B string and Rebekah placing 3^rd in the U20. Back on the track, we weren’t at full strength for the 400s, but Beatriz and Alice both placed in the B strings to keep us moving along, before another boost from Rebekah, Izzy (dipping under 14 seconds for the first time) and Fayo, each winning their sprint hurdles category.

More good news was to follow with three second places and a third in the 200s from Cheyanne, Sophie, Ruby and Honey. The 800s proved a bit more of a struggle with several girls missing and others on their second race of the day: Naimah’s 2^nd place was very creditable in the circumstances. We were also missing regulars in the pole vault but Elsa, in her second event of the weekend, contributed with… 2^nd. Elsewhere in the field, Fayo was producing a quite remarkable performance, or rather performances, in equalling one PB (HJ, finishing 2^nd) and beating another (javelin, winning the B string) within the space of a minute! That must surely be some kind of record! Jackie also finished 2^nd in the B string HJ, with Alice 3^rd in the U20

We were then treated to an impressive exhibition of relay running from the U18 4×100 relay team of Izzie, Cheyanne, Sophie and Ruby. Winning in a time of 46.48 seconds, this moves the Club to the top of the age-group rankings and ahead of every university team other than Loughborough. It added new meaning to ‘enjoying one’s moment in the sun’! The U20s also had a solid run to secure 2^nd spot.

Our day was almost done, but not before our two steeplechasers, Hannah and Lily, had the opportunity to take a cooling dip or two on their way to winning both the U18 A&B strings. With the field drawing to a close with Izzie and Annabelle taking good points in the triple jump, all that remained were the long relays. The U18 squad of Beth, Leah, Alice and Sophie were convincing winners before an impromptu quartet of Naimah, Rebekah, Rowan and Bea contributed to 2^nd and 3^rd places in the two mixed races.

Job done – a win by almost 150 points from Harrow & Dacorum – everyone could look forward to an air-conditioned journey home.
